The seven victims were aboard a Eurocopter EC130 B4 helicopter that crashed at approximately 9:13 a.m. local time in a remote area roughly 170 miles north of Nairobi. According to the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority, the helicopter was traveling south from Loisaba Wildlife Conservancy toward the Ewaso Nyiro River when the crash occurred.
Emergency crews responded to the crash site, but difficult terrain created challenges in reaching the wreckage. Witnesses indicated seeing smoke and flames after the helicopter went down, while response teams worked in the aftermath of the event.

The U.S. State Department confirmed that five American citizens were among the seven victims. Reports stated that the helicopter was based at Loisaba and had picked up passengers from the Suyian Wildlife Sanctuary before the flight ended in the fatal crash.
