Kaden Dean Smith Obituary, YANKEE SPRINGS TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Kaden Dean Smith, 16, a student at Portage Northern High School, lost his life after drowning in Gun Lake on August 12, 2026, during a family gathering in Michigan.
Based on to relatives and agencies, Smith was swimming in Gun Lake when he went underwater and did not resurface. Search crews from several agencies spent more than 36 hours looking for him before his body was recovered on August 14, according to Michigan State Police.
The search brought together crews from the Orangeville Township Fire Department, Yankee Springs Fire Rescue, the Michigan State Police Marine Services Team, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, the Barry County Sheriff’s Office, the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office and Great Lakes Rescue.
Smith’s father, Grand Bahama resident Audley Dean, said the circumstances have been particularly difficult for the loved ones to understand because Kaden was known as a strong and experienced swimmer. Dean said his son loved swimming, was comfortable in the water and had previously spent time at Gun Lake with family.
Born in the United States to an American mother and Bahamian father, Smith maintained a strong connection to The Bahamas and Grand Bahama. His father said Kaden spent time with him on Grand Bahama the previous summer, and the two had hoped to continue making visits to the island in the years ahead.
At Portage Northern High School, Smith was preparing to enter his junior year. He was a musician who played clarinet in both the school’s symphonic and jazz bands. Outside of music, he enjoyed playing basketball with friends at the YMCA, spending time at the beach and gaming with friends.
Kaden’s family described him as joyful, compassionate and someone who made others feel valued. They stated he was known for his sense of humor, laughter, kindness, big smile and warm hugs, adding that his presence had a positive impact on friends and family across the globe.
The loved ones is raising funds to help cover Smith’s funeral arrangements. Any remaining funds are intended to support scholarships in his name for graduating seniors at Portage Northern and Portage Central Schools, while donations in lieu of flowers are also being directed to the Portage Northern High School Band Program.
Smith’s death has left his loved ones, friends, schoolmates and wider community mourning the loss of a 16-year-old remembered for his music, friendships, compassion and love of the water. As his loved ones make arrangements to honor his life, they are working to preserve his memory through scholarships and support for the school program that was part of his life.
