Kevin Burns Obituary: Jupiter, Florida – Beloved History and Civics Teacher Kevin Parker Burns Dies in Water Accident Off Jupiter Coast

Kevin Parker Burns Obituary, JUPITER, Fla. — Kevin Parker Burns, a longtime U.S. History and Civics teacher at Jupiter Middle School, lost his life Friday, Aug. 14, after being caught in a strong current while snorkeling off the Jupiter coast. He was a beloved member of the school local area and had dedicated more than 20 years to educating students.

Per to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, Burns and a friend paddleboarded about half a mile offshore to a reef near the 3000 block of S. A1A on Aug. 14. The two secured their paddleboards at the reef before entering the water to snorkel. While they were in the water, the current became increasingly strong and carried them away from their paddleboards.

After realizing they could not swim against the current to return to the boards, Burns and his friend decided to swim toward shore. His friend eventually reached the shore but noticed that Burns had not returned and was no longer visible in the water. The friend called 911, prompting a response from Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Palm Beach County Fire Rescue.

A Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office helicopter located Burns in the water north of where the paddleboards had been secured. He was taken to Jupiter Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. His parents, Diana and Parker Burns, said the news was difficult to process, recalling the disbelief they felt after learning of his loss.

At Jupiter Middle School, Burns was remembered for his dedication to students and his positive presence. Principal Lisa Hastey described him as a beloved member of the school’s Mariner family and praised his “unwavering commitment to education.” Colleagues remembered him as “the sunshine” and as someone who consistently looked for the bright side and offered a kind word to others.

Burns’ passion for the outdoors and the ocean was also an important part of his life. He led the school’s paddleboard club and was known among colleagues for his early morning paddles. One colleague recalled that Burns would go out around 5:30 a.m., photograph the sunrise and send the pictures to others, often describing the coming day as “sublime.”

His influence on students and colleagues has continued to emerge following his passing. One colleague recalled a student writing that, because of Burns, she had decided to become a history teacher. About 70 teachers and parents gathered the night his death was affirmed to remember him, while additional tributes have continued throughout the school community.

School counselors, additional mental health personnel and school police, including a therapy dog, have been available on campus to support students and staff. Burns’ family is planning a celebration of life near the water in Jupiter, a setting they said would be fitting for someone who loved the ocean. His colleagues and family proceed to remember a teacher, father, son and friend whose positive influence touched many lives. May Kevin Parker Burns be remembered for the dedication, kindness and sunshine he brought to those around him, and condolences are extended to his family, friends, students and the entire Jupiter Middle School community.
